One Book One Island 2008

“The Old Man and the Sea” author Ernest Hemingway on his yacht Pilar, sometime around 1950.

One Book One Island is a collaborative project which seeks to promote reading, literacy and community by encouraging the entire population of Nantucket to read, discuss, and reflect on the same book. In addition, the project is designed to foster the importance of life-long learning for children and adults and to provide multiple opportunities for cultural enrichment in the community through a month-long series of talks, movies and interactive programs.

This year's main reading selection is "The Old Man and the Sea," by Ernest Hemingway. For middle school readers, it's Rodman Philbrick's "The Young Man and the Sea," and for Elementary School-age children it's the late Barbara Cooney's "Island Boy."

The Inquirer and Mirror, one of One Book One Island's underwriters, will provide comprehensive, continuing coverage of this year's program both in the newspaper and on this page on www.ack.net.
